Two Las Vegas Swimming Pool Drownings in December

By Farhan Naqvi, Personal Injury Lawyer in Las Vegas
The final month of the year in Las Vegas usually conjures up images of cooler weather, the National Finals Rodeo, and holiday cheer. Rarely do people associate December with swimming pools. However, the mild climate in Las Vegas allows people to enjoy swimming pools throughout the calendar year. Unfortunately, that means the chances of swimming pool drownings in December are higher in Vegas than they are in most of the U.S.
Two fatal drownings were recorded this month. On December 8, a man drowned to death on the Strip at the Imperial Palace Hotel swimming pool. Authorities say that 37-year old man was discovered by hotel security personnel about 6:45pm that evening. The drowning of the man, who was staying at the hotel with friends, appears to have been accidental.
On the following Tuesday, tragedy struck in Boulder City where a two-year old boy was found dead in the backyard swimming pool at his home. According to reports, the boy’s father called for help shortly after 12:30pm and said that he had found his nonresponsive son floating in the pool. The boy was rushed to the hospital, but was pronounced dead around 4pm that day.
In both of these instances, it doesn’t appear that any criminal charges will be filed based on the current information. But it remains to be seen whether the first drowning victim’s family will file a wrongful death lawsuit against the Imperial Palace. The Boulder City tragedy illustrates how easy it can be for a toddler to wander into a residential swimming pool and drown. If the victim had been a neighbor, the homeowner could possibly have been held liable in a wrongful death lawsuit.
