Segway Breakdowns Can Cause Serious Injuries

Many people enjoy walking up and down the Las Vegas strip. But there is a growing contingency of people who don’t walk the Strip, but rather glide the strip on their Segways. These devices allow a single person to travel at a speed of up to 12 miles per hour in a compact, vertical scooter.
But there is a drawback to the Segway and Segway imitators – the risk of a breakdown or mechanical error which can lead to very serious injuries.
The Segway can be a very sensitive piece of equipment. If you lean forward, the Segway goes forward.  You lean back, the Segways goes back. It reacts to the rate in which you move the device and will actually shut off automatically, without warning, if it interprets your movements to be erratic. This is very risky. Imagine, you are crossing Las Vegas Boulevard on your Segway headed to the Venetian Resort-Hotel-Casino going 5 miles per hour, but then you notice car traveling down the road and you decide to increase your speed to 10 miles per hour. If the Segway does not accept this increase, it will just shut off, even if you are in the middle of the road. Talk about dangerous! This could result in you getting hit a by car or truck and suffering a broken neck, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, or even death.
Another issue is that some Segways have a defect where the software inside the device will suddenly apply too much “reverse torque” on the wheels which can cause you to fall off the Segway. The manufacturers recalled specific Segway models to address the issue, but that doesn’t mean the problem has gone away.
If you suffered a serious injury involving a Segway, or any other personal transportation device, that broke down or had some type of mechanical error, consult with an injury lawyer and consider filing a product liability claim. The outcome of product liability cases usually hinges on highly technical investigations concerning the means of failure. We have a network of experts in the fields of engineering, materials science and other disciplines. We would work closely with these professionals to understand exactly how the Segway failed.
Filing a product liability claim is important, not only so you can recover compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering, but to also highlight a problem with a device so the general public is aware of what can happen to them.
