What is Mirena®?
The Mirena® is an IUD manufactured by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals. It is a small device that is inserted into the uterus to prevent conception. It works by releasing the drug levonorgestrel into the uterus in small amounts. Levonorgestrel is a progestin hormone that prevents pregnancy. Much less medication is required from a Mirena® IUD than from oral contraceptives like the Pill, as it releases directly into the uterus. However, there are severe risks that come with the Mirena® IUD, and the lawsuits allege that Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals knew of these risks, but concealed, obscured, and otherwise understated the potential adverse effects.
Side Effects of Mirena®
Once inserted, a Mirena® can stay in the uterus for up to 5 years. In many women, however, it migrates from the position it was initially inserted in, and requires surgical location and removal. Although Bayer was straightforward in the literature regarding the possibility of a perforated uterus upon having the Mirena® inserted, the literature is silent as to all of the migration-related perforations that Mirena® customers have been experiencing post-implantation.

- Ectopic pregnancy;
- Intrauterine pregnancy (a pregnancy in the uterus with the IUD in place);
- Group A streptococcal sepsis;
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID);
- It can become embedded in the uterine wall; and
- Perforation of the uterine wall or cervix or abdomen.
There are also a number of other side effects that may result from using Mirena®, including vaginitis, ovarian cysts, headaches, breast tenderness, pelvic pain, and painful menstruation.
