Red Light Runner Kills Elderly Driver

There’s often a debate about the age demographic whose drivers are the most unsafe. Some people would say that younger drivers are the most dangerous because they are less experienced and tend to take more risks. Others claim that elderly drivers are more hazardous because their eyesight and reaction times are worse than the majority of other drivers.

This won’t end the discussion on this topic, but a weekend motor vehicle collision which was apparently caused by a young adult resulted in an elderly woman losing her life.

The auto accident happened in Las Vegas at the intersection of Cheyenne Avenue and Grand Canyon Drive. On Saturday morning about 11am, a 21-year old man was driving a 1999 Dodge Durango west on Cheyenne when witnesses say that he ran a red light at Grand Canyon. His sport utility vehicle slammed into a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis that was being driven by an 82-year old woman. The woman was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but later succumbed to her injuries.

If the investigation does determine that the 21-year old man ran a red light, the surviving family members of the victim could choose to file a wrongful death lawsuit against him. Such legal action may allow the family to collect reimbursement for medical and burial expenses, as well as damages pertaining to loss of care and companionship and/or pain and suffering.

In this particular case, either driver distraction or negligence appears to be the cause of running a red light. Sadly, both young adults and elderly people can be guilty of these shortcomings.
