The Most Dangerous Intersections in Las Vegas

highway

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),car accidents are the leading cause of injury and death in our country. Drunk drivers, distracted drivers, and other negligent drivers can cause an accident out of the blue, leaving you injured or worse. While sometimes there is just nothing you can do to protect yourself other than wearing your seat belt and using proper safety restraints for your children, in other cases a little bit of knowledge can go a long way. That is why it is important that you be aware of some of the more dangerous areas to be when you are driving around Las Vegas.
Police Identify Most Dangerous Intersections
The Las Vegas Police Department regularly releases a list of the most dangerous intersections in our community. It released the most recent list just a couple of weeks ago, and it is based on the department’s statistics regarding crashes involving injuries in the last six months. News station KTNV reports that the top five intersections on the list are:

  1. Cheyenne and Rancho with twelve crashes in six months
  2. Rainbow and Desert Inn with ten crashes in six months
  3. Nellis and Washington with nine crashes in six months
  4. Rainbow and Sahara with eight crashes in six months
  5. Christy and Charleston with eight crashes in six months

The police department also released other traffic accident statistics along with the dangerous intersections. While the number of traffic fatalities is down almost 24% compared to last year, 30% of all auto-related fatalities were pedestrians. Pedestrian accidents can be particularly dangerous as most of the victims are either elderly or very young, making them particularly susceptible to life threatening injuries. An additional risk factor for being killed as a pedestrian in a traffic accident is alcohol consumption. According to the CDC, 34% of all pedestrians killed in traffic accidents in 2012 were legally drunk. While walking after you have had a few too many drinks is certainly safer than driving, the safest bet of all is getting a ride from a designated driver, cab, public transit vehicle, or ridesharing company.
Tropicana Avenue May be Getting Safer
KVVU reported back in February of this year that three of the five most dangerous intersections in Las Vegas at that time were along Tropicana Avenue. Unfortunately, not every dangerous intersection from earlier this year has improved. The intersection at Sahara Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard was number five on the February list, but it climbed to the number four spot by the end of the year. At the time of the February report, a startling number of the fatal accidents were motorcycle accidents.
