Types and Causes of Brain Injuries

People get injured all the time in all kinds of different situations. But one of the most devastating injuries is head trauma. Whether you fell off an ATV in Clark County, slipped and fell at a Boulder City grocery store, or were rear-ended on a North Las Vegas thoroughfare, head injuries could result in permanent brain damage (or even death).
Here are the four basic types of brain injuries:

  • Concussion. The most common kind of brain injury, it occurs when the brain gets jarred due to impact. The victim often loses consciousness or becomes dizzy.
  • Brain contusion. This happens when bruising actually appears on the brain due to head trauma. Like skin bruises, bleeding and swelling frequently accompany a brain bruise.
  • Skull fracture. This takes place when the skull bone essentially cracks, often propelling bone fragments into the brain which can cause lacerations and swelling.
  • Hematoma. Usually occurring after a brain contusion or skull fracture, this is identified by a bump which is formed when blood pools in the brain. This can manifest itself days or weeks after the initial injury.

It is important to seek medical attention whenever an individual loses consciousness, vomits, seizes, or convulses after a head injury or if feelings of nausea or dizziness persist. If left untreated, a brain injury can cause loss of memory, motor function, or sensation in limbs. Traumatic brain injuries may lead to drastic personality changes, damage to the nervous system, comas, and even death.
If you have suffered a serious head injury due to someone else’s recklessness or disregard for your safety, call a qualified personal injury lawyer as soon as you can.
